2005 Writers' Guidelines

1. We are looking for new work done by new playwrights. We will only accept plays that have not already received a professional production. Published plays are not eligible, nor are plays that have won awards. Basically, we want to encourage up-and-coming (although not necessarily young!) playwrights. If you write "playwright" on your income tax form under occupation, this is not for you!

2. This year, for the first time, we are awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place prizes. First Place prize will be $100; Second Place prize will be $50; and Third Place prize will be $25.

3. Playwrights must include a $5 flat registration fee, which will cover up to six plays. If paying by check or money order, please make fee payable to Stormy Weather Players. There are no royalties paid to playwrights whose works are selected for the Festival.

4. Playing time must be 10 minutes or less.

5. There is no restriction on subject matter. However, we are looking for plays that have a broad appeal. Please exercise caution when using violence, obscenity, etc. -- make sure it is artistically justified.

6. Each playwright may submit as many as six plays.

7. Twenty plays will be chosen for performance in the Festival, to be held in *August 2005. Simple staging requirements, including props and sets, will be accommodated. Audience members are given feedback forms to fill out. We collect and collate the forms, and feedback is provided to the playwrights.

8. Playwrights are invited to attend the production. Winning playwrights will be entitled to four free tickets to the Festival on the evening their work is staged. Playwrights unable to attend can, of course, pass their tickets on to someone else. The Festival is held in Orange County, New York, which is in the Hudson Valley Area.

9. You must include a short biographical sketch of yourself with your submission. Tell us what you do for a living, your writing background and aspirations, how you heard about the Festival, and anything else you think the audience might find interesting (no more than a well-written 5-6 sentence paragraph, please!).

10. We encourage electronic submissions. Please send your plays in either Microsoft Word, Final Draft or Adobe Acrobat Reader formats. Follow up with an e-mail so that we can make sure we've received and are able to access your work.

11. If you choose to mail your work, include two copies of each play and a SASE postcard so that we can acknowledge receipt of your play. All plays will be shredded, unless we receive other instructions and the appropriate SASE.

12. Entries must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than January 31, 2005.

Thank you all for your submissions. We have received just about 200 plays! If you have not heard back from us that we have received your submission please email us.

* Denotes Change

13. Please send your entries to:
